ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICES

Assistive Listening Devices, also known as ALD's refer to devices other than hearing aids that may be used in conjunction to hearing aids and/or without hearing aids.

Most ALD's are designed to be used to improve speech understanding on landlines, mobile phones, television, in lectures, school, church or meetings.  Other ALD's are designed for daily living and safety. Some examples are specially designed doorbells, baby monitors, fire alarms and alarm clocks.

ITE, ITC, CIC & IIC
HEARING AIDS

ITE's (In-The-Ear) as well as ITC's (In-The-Canal) hearing aids are the type that are built to fit into the ear canal and ear.  There are also many different sizes.  Some fill the whole concha while others known as CIC's (Completely-In-Canal) are much smaller.

The most recent size and shape is known as the IIC (Invisible-In-Canal) hearing aid which is even smaller than the CIC's.  Depending on canal size, they are able to be placed far down the ear canal, making them mostly invisible.

BTE  & RITE HEARING AIDS

BTE's or Behind-The-Ear hearing aids are the type that fit behind your ear and have a tube and mould or dome taking the sound from the hearing aid into the ear canal.   There are different size BTE's depending on the battery size and strength of the hearing aid.

RITE's or Receiver-In-The-Ear hearing aids look very similar to BTE's but the slim tube has a wire running through it and the receiver sits in the ear canal, inserted into the dome or mould attachment.
